A teacher in the US was [ punished for allowing students to reenact two controversial killings ]( http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/22/alabama-teacher-michael-brown-trayvon-martin-suspended-students ) , which the students themselves selected as important current events. I don't see why students should not learn about these events in that way.
