Jihadi groups in north Mali run on [ funds obtained by smuggling drugs north ]( http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/sep/16/islamist-groups-african-drug-smuggling-operation ) . I seem to recall that Islam disapproves of these drugs. It would be hard to reconcile the smuggling with being an "Islamist".
