Small satellites, "cubesats", are being placed in long-lived orbits thus [ increasing the danger of collisions that generate space debris ]( http://phys.org/news/2014-09-space-debris-expert-cubesat-collision.html ) . The disaster shown in the movie Gravity is in fact happening, though [ far more slowly than in the movie ]( https://stallman.org/archives/2010-jul-oct.html#06%20July%202010%20(Global%20Warming%20and%20space%20junk) ) . The question is whether we can find a way to stop it. In the mean time, we should not do stupid things that are likely to speed it up.
