A solar storm in 2012 could have [ destroyed most electrical equipment on Earth ]( http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/jul/25/extreme-solar-storm-sun-earth ) , except it wasn't pointed at Earth. We need to develop precautions, because sooner or later one will head towards us, and it could happen at any time.
